How to Maintain Oral Health During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Many of our patients are doing their part to follow social distancing guidelines by remaining at home as much as possible. In fact, to achieve maximum levels of risk-management during the Coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic, our office was temporarily closed for two months and returned just a few weeks ago. Although our team is back in the office, we realize many of our patients are still waiting for their dental appointment.
We are taking this opportunity to share some things you can do at home to keep your teeth and gums as healthy as possible until you are able to visit us for dental cleanings and other oral care treatments.
1. Brush your teeth at least twice a day
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and pay special attention to the gum line when brushing your teeth.
2. Floss at least once a day
If you have sensitive gums, you may also you a water flosser to clean in between your teeth.
3. Avoid sharing your toothbrush
The mouth is home to millions of germs. While removing plaque and various soft debris from the teeth, toothbrushes become contaminated with bacteria, saliva, blood, and oral debris. According to the CDC, “Toothbrushes can have germs on them even after rinsing that could raise the risk of infection, especially for people with immune suppression.”
4. Eat a balanced diet with a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes
Avoid foods that are high in sugar and starch, which tend to stick to your teeth. Reducing your sugar intake helps to prevent oral disease while also keeping your immune system strong. Lastly, we recommend drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
5. Clean your toothbrush
Viruses attach themselves to various surfaces including toothbrush handles and soft bristles. Therefore, we recommend cleaning your toothbrush on a regular basis. To do this, simply soak your toothbrush in mouthwash combined with a bit of hydrogen peroxide. After a good soak, rinse your toothbrush with running water. Do this at least twice a week to maintain a clean toothbrush.
6. Avoid covering toothbrushes or storing them in closed containers
This promotes bacteria growth. Instead, let your toothbrush air-dry after each use, and store it in an upright position. Keep your toothbrush separate from other brushes, and avoid sharing toothbrush containers.
7. Wash your hands
Wash your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds before and after brushing your teeth.
We advise our patients within our communities to follow the CDC’s guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Click here to learn more.
